DESCRIPTION: Shirvan in Azerbaijan produces knotted carpets and rugs and, until very recently, almost all Caucasian carpets and kilims from neighbouring provinces were known as Shirvans. Indeed Shirvan is the name applied both to a village and to its surrounding region. Rugs from Shirvan have a relatively coarse but good-quality warp wool, medium pile and high quality density pile. The background colours of these rugs is generally blue or light ivory and (occasionally) in red. Patterns often comprise motifs set into a lattice of stylised plants or into hexagonal medallions that are sometimes starred and always geometrics. Shirvans are amongst the most sought after pieces from antique galleries, museums and private collectors.
